Setting Up Addon Domains in cPanel
The quick and short answer is:
- Log into cPanel on the account to add the domain on.
- Click "Domains" under the "Domains" section.
- Click the "Create A New Domain" button.
- Enter the domain name to add in the "Domain" text box.
- Deselect the "Share document root (/home/username/public_html) with 'domain.tld”." option.
- Enter the directory where you want the files for this domain to exist.
- Click the "Submit" button.
- Update your DNS to point at your Alttrixcloud DNS servers!
This can be a very cost-effective way to provide hosting to more than one of your websites.
The main downside is that all domains share a common cPanel.
This means that if you're setting up hosting for someone other than yourself, you can only give them "master access" to the cPanel. Currently, cPanel doesn't allow the creation of multiple admin users.
Additionally, if you're using a content management system (CMS) such as WordPress, it's VERY important to keep everything updated, such as the core files, themes, and plugins.
The NUMBER ONE reason we see accounts get compromised is that they're using an outdated piece of software, which allows intruders to compromise the entire cPanel. It just takes ONE outdated plugin/theme/WordPress to create problems with all domains inside the account.
This is the main reason why I shy using this method, especially if you don't plan on logging in regularly to keep things updated. If you are keeping your accounts up to date, by all means, this is a great way to add additional domains and content to your Alttrixcloud account!
